The other day I enlisted the help of two eleven year old boys (our son and his buddy) to slice boiled eggs for egg salad sandwiches.
Completely wowed and amazed with the precision slicing ability of this gadget that’s often reserved solely for eggs, the boys wanted to put the slicer to the test. Here are the foods they decided work beautifully in this heavily underutilized gadget:
- Eggs.
- Bananas – perfect thin slices for cooking right into pancakes, serving on top or placing on peanut butter toast.
- Kiwi fruit – thin slices, or lift and turn the kiwi after the first slicing and cut again to make smaller pieces to stir into a yogurt and granola bowl.
- Strawberries – double or triple sliced as with the kiwis, they’re perfect for a fruit salsa with those kiwi and banana pieces. A wonderful accompaniment to homemade cinnamon tortilla chips. The precision strawberry and kiwi slices would also garnish desserts like a boss!
- Soft cantaloupe chunks – slices are great in fruit salad. (Kiwi, strawberry, banana, cantaloupe and you’ve got an egg-slicer-fruit-salad-extraordinaire!)
- Mushrooms – perfect slices for omelettes or pizza.
- Ripe avocados – also perfect for omelettes, on the finished pizza or to layer into sandwiches and wraps.
Sure you could do any of this slicing with a regular knife, but where’s the fun in that? 🙂
These two future food bloggers could have their own YouTube Channel! They could rock a whole series about alternative uses for common kitchen gadgets!
Any opportunity for kids to play in the kitchen is a good thing. Not only does it promote eating wholesome homemade food, it builds self-confidence, I.K. (Intelligence in the Kitchen) and life skills. Too often kids aren’t given enough credit. Kids aren’t limited by paradigms like only slicing eggs with the egg slicer. They do fantastic, creative things in the kitchen and need to be given the opportunity to inspire you while wowing with their talent! Any way you slice it, it’s a positive experience!
Cheers!
